History and Uses:
Agate was named after the Achates river in Sicily which is now called the Dirillo river. It was first found in the 3rd or 4th century BC and one of the oldest stones in recorded history. It comes in a variety of forms and has been used in jewellery since these times. They were prized gems in antiquity and were believed to ward off storms.
The agate stone has a very long association with humans going back to Neolithic people who made a lot of their artefacts using agate. The agates with banded colours were placed at the head of a sleeper to give rich and varied dreams.
It is a stone that brought strength and stability to the wearer.
