Amethyst relates to an ancient Greek legend and derives its name from
ametushos which literally means "not intoxicated". Dionysus who was the god
of revelry and celebration got very upset with the mortals who would not drink
his wine and he declared that he would take revenge on them.
Dionysus had a beautiful maiden named Amethyst and he was going to have
her eaten by his tigers one day whilst she was on her way to worship at the
virgin huntress temple of Artemis. When Amethyst heard about this she asked
for Artemis to give her protection. Artemis had no choice but to turn her into a
pure white statue of quartz in order to save Amethyst from the tigers.
Dionysus saw beautiful Amethyst was and he felt so bad for his bad decision
that he began to weep into his cup of wine. He cried so much that his cup

spilled over the quartz statue and turned it into a beautiful shade of purple.
Because of this, in ancient times the Romans would inlay their cups with
amethyst believing that it would help to protect them from getting too drunk.
It was used to not only from physical addictions but from addictive
relationships as well. Hence amethyst has become known as the Stone of
Sobriety.
Amethyst was used for protection from black magic and treachery and to
make sure of victory in war times and in hunting.
Ancient Egyptians used the amethyst guard against guilty and fearful feelings.
It has been worn as protection from self-deception, as well as a protection
against witchcraft.
Amethyst is known as the Bishop's Stone and in the Catholic religion the
bishops wore amethyst rings to help them keep their minds on spiritual
thoughts and not get intoxicated if they drank too much wine. It is till worn by
the Catholic Bishops today and is known as the "Bishops Stone".
The amethyst symbolizes piety, humility, sincerity and spiritual wisdom. It is
thought the amethyst is the perfect stone to symbolize The Age of Aquarius.
The amethyst has long been used to open the spiritual and psychic centres,
making it one of the power stones.
